The Addi Natura Click Interchangeable Knitting Needles
What's The Big Fuss with Interchangeable Knitting Needles?

Sometimes it feels like I'm the only knitter without a set of interchangeable knitting needles. I see them everywhere. In catalogs, bragged about on blogs, handsomely displayed at the LYS, clicking at knitting events and I'm finally at the point where I need to see what all the fuss is about. I want to know, what is so awesome about interchangeable knitting needles and which ones are the best for me?

What I hear is that it's nice to have one whole set of the same needle brand with various cords. Extra cords can be used as stitch holders...

They come in a nice holder that is easy to carry in your knitting bag. Imagine trying to buy all of the circular knitting needles individually, especially bamboo ones would cost over 150. Buying them as a set could save you money.

So I'm going to do my part to try out all of the various interchangeable knitting needles to see what makes each one great.

So What Have I Been Knitting With Anyway?

Up until now I have been a big fan of the random circular knitting needle sale on ebay. But unfortunately that means I end up with a lot of random metal circular knitting needles all without labeling and with very stiff plastic cables that are difficult to manuver. Let's face it, I usually buy those ebay sales in the hope that some old school plastic susan bates circs will appear and sometimes they do, but I end up with a surplus of the metal circs and those just don't get a whole lotta use. As much as I love the old school plastic Susan Bates, I usually prefer to use those with cotton, which I'm not working with very often right now.

Where to Begin?

I was perusing the Webs Spring 2012 catalog and I was astounded at the many varieties of interchangeable knitting needle sets available. There's multi-colored ones, lace ones, bamboo, square, acrylic. It's stunning. I remember when we were all so happy to have the Denise interchangeable knitting needles, which I haven't tried, but I think I'm going to play with them to get an understanding how far the industry has come.

How the heck am I going to try all these needles without spending a small fortune?

I'm kind of kicking myself now because I could have had an easier time trying out these needles at Stitches, but I guess I didn't want to tempt myself that much. Different interchangeable knitting needles sets come with a testing kit where you buy a small set that has the wood, bamboo and metal needles for you to try out. I think I might order a few of those sets and try them out.

Do you have a set of interchangeable knitting needles? Which ones do you have and why do you like them? Let me know in the comments. This story will continue in the coming weeks as I visit local yarn stores to try out these needles!
